Here’s an idea: Have your students write to a narrative theme established through imagery. Allow them to view some exciting photos, and then develop a well-structured story. Embed an enjoyable and meaningful writing process, and you just might have a fun monthly system established.
Motivate With Space Images
Let’s use space as an example theme. A few minutes on the internet brought me to five evocative images:
- The Grand Canyon of Mars
- First image of mercury from orbit
- Very atmospheric Lego image
- Gorgeous shot of the Milky Way
- An alien–looking ice cave.
Put these up on the overhead and challenge your students to create a tale involving at least one of these pictures. A lot more motivating than some of those prompts in the teacher’s manual, I bet.
