Abstract Thinking

Abstract Thinking

Abstract thinking is the ability to understand ideas that aren’t tied to literal, concrete details.

A lot of curriculum stays painfully literal. Gifted kids outgrow that fast. Abstract thinking lets them work with patterns, symbolism, and meaning—the real meat of learning.

Example:
A maze isn’t just a maze. It’s a metaphor for decision-making.

Why it matters:
When you force abstract thinkers to stay at the surface, they tune out. Give them the deeper layer they’re already trying to reach.

My favorite way to incorporate Abstract Thinking? Use Universal Themes!
