Calvin: I Thought You Were Smart

There's a lesson related to this article at Byrdseed.TV

It’s no secret that I delight in Calvin and Hobbes. I loved the comic as a kid, and now I love it as an educator. This comic presents a frame of mind that I think many gifted kids share: if you have to work, you’re not smart.

i-thought-you-were-smart

Show this comic to your kids and have a little discussion. No need to preach! Let them share their thoughts. Let them do the talking.

Possible questions:

  • Why is Calvin right?
  • Why is Susie right?
  • Who will do better on the test?
  • Who is learning a better long-term skill?
  • Who would you hire to do your homework for you?

This might be an interesting avenue into the we only get stronger when it’s difficult discussion.
