Strategy Game: Chomp

There's a lesson related to this article at Byrdseed.TV ➔

In the strategy game Chomp, players use a rectangular grid and remove squares each turn.

  • Players draw a grid of any size.
  • They decide who goes first.
  • That player picks a square and erases it, along with all pieces to the bottom or to the right.
  • Whoever erases the top-left square loses.

Here’s a sample game:

As always, the goal isn’t merely to play a game, but to push students to think inductively and develop a strategy. How can they pick moves that guarantee a win? Try analyzing a finished game and look for the critical error!
